This calculator provides a density-based class estimate for U.S. LTL planning. It uses the standardized 13-sub density scale introduced through the 2025 NMFC changes, but it is not a substitute for an official NMFC item lookup or carrier tariff.

How to use this calculator

Enter the complete handling-unit dimensions, quantity and weight. The calculator finds pounds per cubic foot first and then maps that density to the 13-sub class scale.

Formula and method

The density scale runs from class 400 for freight below 1 pcf down through progressively lower classes, reaching class 50 at 50 pcf or greater. Density is only one classification characteristic.

Worked example

A handling unit at 9 pcf falls within the 8 to less than 10 pcf density band, which corresponds to class 100 on the standardized density scale.

What to check before you ship

The NMFTA states that freight classification also considers handling, stowability and liability, and some commodity items are not full-density items. Verify the actual NMFC item, applicable rules and carrier tariff before tendering or quoting a critical shipment. Why the result matters

Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.
