Freight decisions become easier to compare when the total shipment cost is translated into a per-unit amount that can be used in margin and pricing models.
How to use this calculator
Enter total shipping cost and the number of product units in the shipment. Optionally enter product value per unit to see shipping cost as a percentage of unit value.
Formula and method
Shipping cost per unit equals total shipping cost divided by unit quantity. Freight percentage equals shipping cost per unit divided by product value per unit.
Worked example
A 1,250 shipment cost spread across 500 units adds 2.50 of shipping cost per unit before any other landed charges.
What to check before you ship
Use the same unit basis across the shipment and the product value. If the shipment contains several products with different values, a weighted allocation method may be more appropriate.
Why the result matters
Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.
