Pallet utilization shows how much of the pallet footprint is actually covered by the estimated carton pattern. It is useful when comparing carton sizes that produce similar carton counts.
How to use this calculator
Enter pallet length and width plus carton length and width. The calculator finds a high-count mixed-row layer pattern, then compares used carton footprint with pallet footprint.
Formula and method
Footprint utilization = cartons per layer × carton base area ÷ pallet area × 100.
Worked example
Ten 40 × 30 cm cartons cover 12,000 cm². On a 120 × 100 cm pallet with 12,000 cm² of footprint, that layer would be 100% utilized by area.
What to check before you ship
Area utilization does not prove load stability and does not mean every small gap can be used. Carton deformation, required spacing and overhang policies still matter.
Why the result matters
Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.
