This tool compares a shipment’s cubic metres with the nominal internal cubic volume of common 20-foot and 40-foot dry containers.

How to use this calculator

Select the container type and enter shipment CBM. The calculator shows approximate cubic utilization and remaining nominal volume.

Formula and method

Utilization percentage = shipment CBM ÷ approximate internal container cubic volume × 100.

Worked example

A 25 m³ shipment compared with a container of roughly 33 m³ internal cube uses about three quarters of its theoretical cubic volume.

What to check before you ship

Cargo cannot usually use 100% of mathematical cube. Package shapes, door dimensions, weight distribution, lashing and loading method matter. Container internal dimensions and payload ratings vary, so confirm equipment specifications with the operator.

Why the result matters

Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.
