Dimensional weight, also called DIM weight, converts package volume into a billing weight. Carriers use it to account for lightweight packages that occupy substantial space.

How to use this calculator

Enter package dimensions, quantity and measurement unit. Select metric or imperial billing and choose the divisor shown in your carrier rate or service rules. Common divisors are included as selectable options rather than being tied to a specific carrier.

Formula and method

Metric dimensional weight is typically length × width × height in centimetres divided by a billing divisor such as 5,000 or 6,000. Imperial calculations commonly use cubic inches divided by values such as 139 or 166. The applicable divisor varies.

Worked example

A 50 × 40 × 30 cm parcel is 60,000 cm³. With a divisor of 5,000, its dimensional weight is 12 kg.

What to check before you ship

Carrier divisors, rounding methods and service rules change. Treat the calculator as a transparent math tool and use the divisor stated by the carrier or contract that applies to your shipment.

Why the result matters

Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.
