Euro Pallet vs US Pallet: Choosing the Right Footprint

Compare 1200×800 mm Euro-style and 48×40 inch North American pallet footprints by carton fit, operations and market requirements.

Pallet footprints are not interchangeable simply because their total areas look similar. Carton dimensions can produce very different whole-number layer patterns on a 1200 × 800 mm pallet and a 48 × 40 inch pallet.

Compare carton fit first

Use the Pallet Size Calculator to see cartons per layer and footprint utilization across common formats. A small change in one pallet dimension can create an extra row of cartons.

Then check the commercial system

Europe commonly uses EUR/EPAL-style footprints in exchange and warehouse systems, while North American operations often plan around 48 × 40 inch GMA-style pallets. Customer receiving systems, racks, forklifts and transport equipment can matter more than geometric efficiency alone.

Use dedicated planners for stack height

Once the footprint is chosen, open the Euro Pallet Calculator or US Pallet Calculator to include carton height and estimate complete layers.

Do not ignore overhang

A pattern that technically increases carton count by extending the load beyond the deck may be prohibited or unsafe. Check the final footprint with the Pallet Overhang Calculator.
