Air versus ocean is not only a rate comparison. The decision usually combines chargeable weight, W/M, fixed local charges and transit time. This tool puts those assumptions in one visible scenario.

How to use this calculator

Enter air chargeable weight, rate and fixed charges. Then enter ocean CBM, weight, LCL rate, minimums and fixed charges. Add planning transit days for both modes.

Formula and method

Air cost = chargeable kilograms × air rate + air fixed charges. Ocean cost uses the greater of CBM, metric tonnes and the entered minimum W/M, then applies any minimum ocean freight charge plus fixed charges.

Worked example

If air costs 2,500 and ocean costs 1,200 but air saves 20 days, the calculator also shows the additional freight spend per day saved.

What to check before you ship

This is a transparent scenario model, not a live quote. Consolidation schedules, customs, pickup/delivery, airport/port charges, inventory carrying cost, reliability and service level can reverse the real business decision.

Why the result matters

Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.

Common questions

Before you rely on the result

Short answers to the practical questions that most often change shipping calculations.

What does the air versus ocean calculator compare?

It compares the air-cost scenario and the LCL ocean-cost scenario you enter, including fixed charges, W/M minimums and transit-day assumptions.

Is the lower modeled freight cost always the better mode?

No. Inventory carrying cost, reliability, handling risk, consolidation schedules, customs, destination charges and service level can change the operational decision.

Are the default rates live market prices?

No. Enter the quotes or planning assumptions relevant to your shipment. CargoToolsHub does not present the defaults as live carrier rates.

Do I need an account to use this calculator?

No. CargoToolsHub calculators run in your browser and do not require a signup.

Should I verify the result before booking freight?

Yes. Use the result as a planning aid and verify carrier-specific rules, equipment limits, tariffs or contractual requirements before a critical shipment.
