The theoretical internal cube of a container is rarely 100% usable. This calculator spreads a known container cost across your planned usable cube so cost-per-CBM comparisons are more realistic.
How to use this calculator
Select a container, enter the container cost, your expected usable-cube percentage and the shipment CBM you want to allocate.
Formula and method
Planned usable cube = nominal internal cube × usable percentage. Effective cost per usable CBM = container cost ÷ planned usable cube.
Worked example
If a 40-foot container costs 2,400 and you expect to use 85% of its nominal cube, the effective cost per usable CBM is higher than dividing by theoretical volume.
What to check before you ship
This is cost allocation, not a physical-fit model. Pallet patterns, payload, door openings, dunnage and booking-specific charges still need separate checks.
Why the result matters
Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.
