Advanced planner
InputsEnter shipment values

The planner tests whole-number rectangular grids for identical items, then adds the entered padding around the finished group. It does not model irregular shapes or compressible products.

The Box Size Calculator turns product dimensions into a practical rectangular carton recommendation. For multiple identical items it tests whole-number grids instead of simply multiplying one dimension by quantity.

How to use this calculator

Enter product dimensions, quantity, padding or working clearance per side and an estimated box-wall thickness. Choose the smallest rectangular grid or force a single layer when products should not be stacked.

Formula and method

The planner tests the six item orientations and whole-number grid combinations that can hold the entered quantity. Padding is added around the completed group, then wall thickness is added to estimate outside dimensions.

Worked example

If six identical items can be arranged 3 × 2 × 1 more efficiently than 6 × 1 × 1, the calculator reports the smaller-volume internal carton before adding wall thickness.

What to check before you ship

This is rectangular geometry, not packaging engineering. Fragile products, partitions, cushioning compression, board grade, irregular shapes and packing tolerances can require a larger carton. Confirm a physical sample before production.

Why the result matters

Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.

The shipping box size guide covers padding and physical validation. After selecting a carton, test unused space with the packaging efficiency calculator.

Common questions

Before you rely on the result

Short answers to the practical questions that most often change shipping calculations.

How does the box size calculator choose a layout?

It tests the six basic item orientations and whole-number rectangular grids. It minimizes internal volume first, then breaks equal-volume ties by unused positions, longest dimension, aspect ratio and surface area so the recommendation is more practical.

Does the suggested external box size include corrugated-board thickness?

Yes. The external estimate adds the wall-thickness value you enter to both sides of each internal dimension. Real board caliper and manufacturing tolerances still need confirmation.

Is this a full cartonization optimizer?

No. It is a transparent rectangular-grid planning tool for identical box-shaped items. Irregular products, nesting, compression and advanced 3D packing can require a dedicated packaging study.

Do I need an account to use this calculator?

No. CargoToolsHub calculators run in your browser and do not require a signup.

Should I verify the result before booking freight?

Yes. Use the result as a planning aid and verify carrier-specific rules, equipment limits, tariffs or contractual requirements before a critical shipment.
