The LCL versus FCL decision is not controlled by CBM alone. This tool combines shipment cube, weight, LCL W/M pricing, minimum W/M, minimum ocean-freight charge, fixed charges and an FCL quote so you can see the modeled crossover point.
How to use this calculator
Enter shipment CBM and weight, the LCL rate per W/M, any minimum chargeable W/M and minimum ocean-freight charge, known LCL fixed charges, the comparable FCL quote and FCL fixed charges. Select the container used for the FCL scenario.
Formula and method
W/M uses the greater of cubic metres or metric tonnes. Modeled LCL cost uses the greater of actual W/M and the entered minimum W/M, applies the entered monetary minimum when it is higher, then adds fixed charges. Modeled FCL cost equals the entered FCL quote plus fixed charges. The break-even W/M is where the two modeled costs are equal.
Worked example
If the FCL modeled total is 1,800 in your currency, LCL fixed charges are 400 and the LCL rate is 70 per W/M, the simple crossover occurs at about 20 W/M before operational differences are considered.
What to check before you ship
Use comparable quote components. Transit time, schedule reliability, CFS handling, free time, pickup and delivery, destination charges, customs workflow and cargo risk can make the operationally better choice different from the lowest modeled headline cost.
Why the result matters
Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.
The LCL versus FCL break-even guide explains the decision beyond price. Check the W/M reference before entering the rating basis.
