Mixed-SKU packing is a heuristic planning estimate, not proof of physical fit. Maximum 500 cartons per run for browser performance.

Mixed-SKU pallet planning is harder than a one-box pallet calculator because several carton sizes compete for the same footprint, height and weight capacity. This planner accepts multiple SKU rows and estimates how the mix can be distributed across pallets.

How to use this calculator

Set the pallet dimensions, pallet/packaging tare, height and gross-weight limits, then add carton types with dimensions, quantity and weight. The planner allows base rotation and applies a greedy shelf-and-layer heuristic to the carton list.

Formula and method

The algorithm sorts larger and taller cartons first, fills shelf rows inside each layer, starts new layers when needed and starts a new pallet when the current pallet cannot accept the next carton within the entered geometry and gross-weight limits after tare is included.

Worked example

A mixed shipment with three carton sizes may use pallet space more efficiently than treating every SKU as a separate pallet, but the exact gain depends on the dimensions and sequence. The planner provides a repeatable scenario estimate rather than a hand calculation.

What to check before you ship

This is not an exact three-dimensional optimization proof. Mixed-SKU stacking must also respect crush strength, stack compatibility, center of gravity, pallet tare, labeling, pick sequence and customer or warehouse rules.

Why the result matters

Accurate dimensions and weights help with quoting, space planning and avoiding preventable adjustments. Always use the packaged outside dimensions that will actually be tendered for transport, and verify any carrier-specific rules that affect billing or classification.

The mixed-SKU pallet planning guide explains why a layout estimate still needs stability and weight checks. Use the pallet weight calculator for a separate mass check.

Common questions

Before you rely on the result

Short answers to the practical questions that most often change shipping calculations.

How does the mixed-SKU planner work?

It uses a greedy layer-and-shelf heuristic, allows base rotation and distributes the entered carton mix across estimated pallets while respecting height and weight limits.

Is mixed-SKU pallet packing mathematically exact?

No. Mixed-size 3D packing is a difficult optimization problem. This browser tool is a planning heuristic and should be checked against warehouse rules and a physical load plan.

How many cartons can I test?

The planner limits a run to 500 cartons to keep the browser responsive. Split very large scenarios into representative batches.

Do I need an account to use this calculator?

No. CargoToolsHub calculators run in your browser and do not require a signup.

Should I verify the result before booking freight?

Yes. Use the result as a planning aid and verify carrier-specific rules, equipment limits, tariffs or contractual requirements before a critical shipment.
